What is Sewing and What is it Really All About?

In the media today, you'll find TV shows and books who send out the message that sewing is DULL, BORING, HARD, AND MADE FOR GRANDMAS. Well, we believe that they are wrong! We understand that not everyone LOVES sewing, but we do and we think you should try it! You'll probably really like it!

Another thing that makes people not want to sew is the DANGER of having the needle go in your hand or thumb as you are sewing. We assure that with the sewing machines they have today it is pretty much impossible to have that happen to you unless you purposely do it. Your finger can't even fit under the sewing foot, and if it can't go under there, it can't get sewn on. Really, sewing is not dangerous or harmful in any reasonable way. And when your hand-sewing, you can use a thimble if you are still unsure. And besides, it barely hurts if you DO poke yourself with hand-sewing needle.

Wait WHAT!?!? What is hand-sewing and what makes it different from sewing on a machine? Glad you asked! Hand sewing is when you use a threaded needle and a string of thread to sew something like a pillow closed, or a decoration on or something like that: something you couldn't do on a machine.
Sewing on the machine is 9 out of 10 how you sew. You use it to do everything else. Plus, these days you can find special machines such as Computerized, ones with Embroidery built in, and lots of decorative stitching modes. Goodness, you can even sew with TWO NEEDLES in some editions! The possibilities in sewing are endless. And like drawing a picture, things are rarely ever the exact same.

Another extent to sewing is the fabric you use. This is the main ingredient. There are THOUSANDS to choose from in the world, and there is usually a pretty wide variety at your local craft stores such as Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and the craft section at Wal-Mart.

This is a lot to learn about sewing! Thanks for reading!
